Wellness / Vaccinations / Microchipping
Regular wellness checkups can be useful to prevent major illnesses and catch up on routine vaccinations. During wellness exams, sheath cleaning (bean removal) and dental care (float) are also recommended to ensure your horse’s overall health and wellness. We carry the most common environmental, Flu/Rhino, and Strangles vaccines.
Dental Care (Float)
Dental care is an essential part of maintaining your horse’s health. Have you noticed your horse dropping feed, losing weight, or sensitivity to the bit? A thorough oral exam may be in order. To do so, we sedate your horse; once sedated, a speculum is used to open the horse’s mouth so our veterinarian can conduct a thorough exam, checking for loose teeth, abscesses, or abnormalities. We use battery-operated and some hand tools to balance the mouth.
Lameness Exams
We understand that lameness can cause stress to you and your horse. We will carefully examine your horse’s condition and try to solve the mystery of lameness with palpation, flexion testing, and imaging, if necessary.
Pre Purchase exams
Pre Purchase exams are recommended for any potential new horse purchase to determine soundness and suitability. During a prepurchase exam, we look for signs of potential lameness, neurological concerns, and overall physical health. Radiographs may be recommended to determine the overall health of the feet and if there are any signs of arthritis (ringbone).
Lab work
Bloodwork can be a great diagnostic tool for potential concerns or great for routine wellness checks. We offer many blood panels to suit your horse’s needs.
X-Ray
Radiographs are a great diagnostic tool for many different ailments ranging from lameness to stifle injuries.
Surgery
Several surgeries can be conducted in the field to alleviate some stress for both the horse and the owner. Your horse will undergo necessary sedation. After the procedure, appropriate pain management and antibiotics will be given for a comfortable recovery. The most common surgeries are castration, mass removals, and hernia repairs.
General Wound Care
It can be hard to haul an injured horse and many wound treatments can be conducted in the field. Appropriate pain management and antibiotics will aid in a speedy recovery. The most common treatments we see are laceration repair and abscess drainage.
Colic Treatment
Colic is one of the most common emergencies that we experience. Colic can be an excruciatingly painful ailment that causes severe abdominal pain. Signs of colic are restlessness, rolling, pawing at the stomach, lack of eating or drinking, irritability, and not defecating normally. Colic can range from mild to severe and can be fatal if not treated appropriately. If you suspect your horse is colicking, don’t hesitate to call us!
Choke Treatment
Choke is an esophageal obstruction and occurs when food or other objects block the esophagus, preventing the food from passing from the mouth to the stomach. Signs of choke are nasal discharge, difficulty swallowing, not eating, drooling, and repeated attempts to swallow. If you suspect your horse has choke, don’t hesitate to call us!
Fluid Therapy
Living in Arizona, it is not uncommon to have an animal become dehydrated, especially during the summer months. Dehydration can cause further complications, such as Colic. Call us today if you suspect your horse is dehydrated.
